A Tale of Two Tragedies

Today is December 9. We cover the verdict on Daniel Penny, the identity of the healthcare CEO assassin, the viral photo of Donald Trump and Jill Biden, Greta Thunberg condemning countries, an airplane hijacking, and much more.

I: THE DML REPORT

Luigi Mangione / Daniel Penny

What is Just?

Written by Denny

15th Century English Judge Francis Bacon once wrote: “If we do not maintain justice, justice will not maintain us.”

I believe justice is more subjective than many would like to admit. But I also believe justice always has its day at some point when God deems it. Some deem it to be karma, others bad luck. It can be as wild as solving a twenty-year cold case or as straightforward as capturing an assassin on the run. Our laws in place are designed to make interpreting justice more streamlined, but under the surface, justice is in the eye of the beholder.

Justice sometimes falls into gray zone territories. We’re led to question what is right, what is wrong, what is just. Is justice following the law through and through? What about vigilante justice? The Robin Hood types? Those with decent intentions but wrong methods of action?

A perfect case in point involves two late twenty-something-year-old men in New York City, both imbued in their own tales of murder and death.

We start with Daniel Penny. Right off the bat, the 25-year-old was finally acquitted in court today in the case of Jordan Neely’s death, the drugged-up subway rider who threatened the lives of fellow passengers. Penny placed Neely in a chokehold to stop him from hurting passengers; Neely died, and Penny was arrested. It’s been a clown show process and trial ever since.

It was a tragedy to begin with that Penny was ever handcuffed, in my opinion. I believed since seeing the video for the first time that Penny was innocent in the death of Jordan; that he was simply an honest pedestrian looking to help others who were in danger. Passengers, the eyewitnesses to the event, confirmed it.

And yet, others out there believe today’s verdict was an injustice to the New Yorker law system and the Black community apparently. Despite the layout of the facts, some believe that Penny is a murderer who should be behind bars, including Neely’s family (who were conveniently absent during Jordan’s mental health struggles when he was alive).

Penny will walk free, thankfully, but he will be hurled with accusations of being a “murderer,” “racist,” and “white supremacist” for the rest of his life by Neely supporters and leftists. The likelihood of riots is high tonight, and many brainwashed young black teens out there will be led to believe Penny is evil and Neely must be avenged like others “unjustly” killed before him.

But, while Penny will be let out to live his life tonight, Luigi Mangione will be put behind bars.

Mangione is the 26-year-old Ivy League graduate suspected of killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City days ago. He was captured by authorities following an extensive manhunt after being spotted at a McDonald’s in Pennsylvania.

Before his arrest, Mangione would not have passed as a corporate assassin. He’s a high school valedictorian and an Ivy League scholar from Penn State. He majored in engineering and was a wrestler. He had a circle of close friends and was an avid reader. He had a loving and successful family; his cousin is a Maryland state delegate. So why did he ghost them and go missing months ago?

According to online reports, Mangione previously had major back surgery for an injury he sustained surfing in Hawaii. The surgery wasn’t successful, and Mangione got hooked on psychedelics and other drugs to maintain the pain. According to friends, it changed him. He left the U.S. for Japan and cut off contact with his family, leaving them in the dark about his whereabouts.

As the investigation into Mangione continues, more will come to light. Social media users have already found his GoodReads account, where he has reviewed over 290 books—many of them on philosophies and ideologies, and some even on managing back pain. We’ll learn more in the coming days about how he directly connects with UnitedHealthcare. Was he denied coverage? Did his insurance drop him? Were his actions induced by the psychedelic drugs?

We’ll get answers to these questions (probably more so than the attempted Trump assassinations), but many are already calling Luigi a hero. I don’t condone murder, so I’m not one of those people. However, when these dots all start to connect, including reports he had a grandfather and grandmother who died from illnesses and may have had issues with coverage, the canvas begins to show. Some say Luigi’s assassination of Thompson was a message to those the health insurance industry has wronged. Based on his social media posts, Mangione found the corporate healthcare industry to be vulturous. This may have been his act of revenge.

So yes, I may come to a point of understanding when the full picture becomes clear as to why he did what he did, but it does not mean justice was served. Thompson might be a greedy corporate sleaze. He’s also a father and husband. I don’t think Luigi throwing his life away by taking Thompson’s was the justice he was searching for. His murdering of Thompson, while viewed as justified by Luigi’s supporters (there are already fan social media accounts popping up of him), will weigh on his conscience for the rest of his life. And it’s a shame he chose this path. In researching him, I watched his graduation speech given at his high school. He is quite intelligent and bright. He traded a future of opportunity for a life behind bars in order to try and prove a point.

In Luigi’s and his supporters’ eyes, they believe he embodied vigilante justice. He took out the executive leader of the biggest health insurance company in the country, known for their staggering denial and rejection of coverage costs to loyal customers. But in the eyes of Thompson’s two young sons, they lost their father to unjust violence.

My overall takeaway: Penny killed Neely without intent; his objective being to protect those on the subway train. Mangione killed Thompson with intent; his alleged misguided purpose was to avenge those wronged by health insurance companies, such as possibly himself or his grandparents.

We will have to see what the next few days bring us with emerging details about Mangione. Even so, the internet debate will rage on over Mangione’s act of murder, whether it was justified or not.

And even though the trial is over, the debate will rage on if justice was served to Penny in the death of Neely. Either way, I’m happy Daniel Penny is a free man. And while illegal immigration and inflation need to be tackled next year, Trump and his administration need to find the solution to our very damaged healthcare system that has failed millions of taxpaying Americans. Many of them are CLEARLY fed up.

We talked about Neely’s acquittal today on the podcast, but we also discussed the overthrowing of Assad in Syria and Trump’s interview with Meet the Press. Check it out below:

II: WHITE HOUSE 2024

Fragrance of a Fighter

TRUMP 2024

Don Meets Jill

President-elect Donald Trump has turned a viral photo of himself chatting with Jill Biden at the reopening ceremony of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris into a brilliant marketing opportunity.

Conservatives and meme-makers initially had fun captioning the photo, but Trump has now taken it a step further by tying the moment to the launch of his new fragrance line.

In the photo, which quickly spread across social media, Trump is seen speaking with Jill Biden as they are seated. The First Lady smiled warmly during her conversation with Trump.

Trump said to the New York Post about the encounter, “She couldn’t have been nicer. We had a very nice conversation. It’s politics—you have to get used to it.”

What started as a playful internet moment evolved into a marketing masterstroke. A caption reading, “A Fragrance Your Enemies Can’t Resist!” caught fire on social media, and Trump capitalized on the buzz by promoting his actual fragrance line. Known for his knack for branding, Trump turned a lighthearted moment into a clever business move.

Misery loves “misinformation”

THE LEFT 2024

How dare Greta?!

Climate activist Greta Thunberg sparked outrage Friday after a video surfaced of her laughing and declaring “f–k Germany” and “f–k Israel” during an anti-Israel rally in Mannheim, Germany.

The 21-year-old joined the protest, which reportedly included 700 participants, to discuss “solidarity with Palestine and the climate movement.” In the video, Thunberg can be heard making the inflammatory remarks to cheers and applause from the crowd, before bursting into laughter herself.

Critics were quick to condemn Thunberg’s comments, pointing out the irony of targeting Israel, a nation widely recognized for its advancements in addressing climate challenges. “Someone should remind Greta that Israel is a global leader in solving climate challenges,” wrote one user on X.

III: BORDERLESS

Tijuana runway

Terror in the sky

A 31-year-old man was arrested Sunday morning after attempting to hijack a Mexican domestic flight and reroute it to the United States.

The suspect, identified as "Mario N," attacked a flight attendant mid-flight and tried to break into the cockpit, forcing the plane to divert.

The flight, originally scheduled to travel from León to Tijuana, landed in Guadalajara, where the Mexican National Guard detained the man. Authorities revealed that he was traveling with his wife and two children and bizarrely claimed a close relative had been kidnapped. He also stated he received a death threat warning him not to travel to Tijuana.
